Nope, not your barber but I did attend the Orientation Center For the Blind
in Albany, so I do know the area. I Grew up in Vacaville, Alameda and Castro
Valley, returning to Vacaville in 9th grade and staying there until I was 33
(going to college in El Cajon during that period). My immediate family is
still in California, in Roseville and the greater San Francisco bay area.
I had the privilege of hearing the final launch of discovery, from the

I've also got a much less well edited but still very good quality recording
of the sonic boom the Discovery made as it passed over the Tampa bay area on

I apologize ahead of time for the abrupt ending of this recording. I stopped
the recorder soon after the sonic boom. The jingling and tinny bangs you
here right after the boom are the sounds of our cats and dogs all running
through the "doggie door" back into the house to escape the big boomy thing
that sounds like its coming from everywhere and might get them (smile). They
had been happily hanging out with us in the backyard, not knowing we were
waiting for the big booms.
You'll notice that you actually hear two sonic booms as the shuttle passed
overhead, it's because the wings and the tail assembly (if I remember
correctly) each generate their own booms (the delta-winged lifting body of
the shuttle generates one and the vertical tail assembly generates the
other).
I hope you, and anyone else on the list who checks them out, enjoys the
recordings, though they may not be as nicely edited as I'd like, the sound
recorded is pretty good.

Hi Ron, I am in El Cerrito near San Francisco. I used to have a barber
named Ron Miller, but it's probably not you! I guess, from your email, that
you are in or around Tampa Fl. I visited my wifes cousin there over a year
ago waiting for the last space shuttle to launch in November. About 20
minutes before we were going to leave to drive to the Cape, they announced a
technical glitch in the hydrogen umbilical and that pause lasted I don't

I don't have immediate info about the software but will ask some VI friends
who do use it.
Regarding interest in scanner receivers, you may be surprised at how many
hams are also comms monitors (or perhaps you won't be so surprised). if you
are interested, there is a list which has been recently started specifically
as a place for scanner hobbyists who are blind to gather and swap ideas,
info, etc. It is the "Monitoring Blind" list and you can send a blank email

Hi list, I am wondering if anyone uses the software called FreeScan to work
with the newer trunking scanners like the PSR or Uniden scanners.

396 handheld scanner? I have the PSR 500 handheld which works fine but am
interested in the capabilities of the Uniden scanner as well. If you want,
