As for the MFJ:  Are you sure you have the coax cables connected to the 
right  jacks on both the tuner and radio?  I've never used a 570, but 
the 3 kenwoods I have all have 6 meters and so have 2 so-239's on the 
radio.  If this is the case with you, be sure you are on the right one.

And be sure you have the  right coax jacks on the rear of the tuner and 
the front antenna switch set right.    Set the caps to mid range and try 
all settings on the inductor till you get loudest noise.

The external tuner is probably working.  When you connect the auto tuner 
to the radio with the  interface cable, the internal tuner is disabled 
and you actually tune the auto tuner by pressing the tune button on the 
radio.  Again, be sure you  have all coax cables connected to the right 
jacks.
