yep, I suspect having that little tiny bit of extra inductance or 
capacitence on the older motorized rollers allows for a wider tuning range. 
perhaps more precise tuning as well compared to the on/off nature of relays 
and potential small gaps in the liniar value of the inductor or capacitor 
being used.
Just a theory, but perhaps relevant since it does seem as though the older 
motorized internal tuners, though bigger and using more moving parts, seem, 
by all accounts, to have an advantage over the newer style.
Those old 1 and 2KW tuners with the big knobs on the front certainly are 
worth their weight these days.
