To give up on HF because of that is asinine, if it bothers them they can
always go to the WARC bands. I was on 17 meters a bit this morning and found
actually 10, 15, 20 to be pretty good with plenty of holes between
contesters. Granted that's on a 102 inch whip mostly, on 20 the Carolina bug
catcher but the bands were good  enough I don't think the antenna hurt me
that much. The permanent antenna is going up in the next couple weeks,
depending on when the baby comes. I have a crew we're just working on dates
now. Finally, having fun on ham radio again. The ground is thawed enough I
think we can do it. It will be so good to get up and running good on HF
again.
