...strict vegetarianism is basically a lifestyle choice more related  
to religious practice than anything else.

Vegetarianism certainly originated in eastern religions.  But I'd be  
curious if the standard western vegetarian tends to be more a  
religious individual than the norm.  My experience suggests not.
