The people and organizations behind this effort needs to be
applauded. This is a positive move in seeking a democratic response to
the political challenges that we face as a country and as a people. We
need a new beginning and a new start.
At this point there are so many divergent interest; and
notwithstanding the fact that people want a restoration of democracy,
the motivation for the different interest persuasions are real and
people who share the same interest persuasions will solicit with others
and solidify their positions in any conflict situation. This can only
be normal if the institutional and democratic infrastructure is
anchored to promote and uphold the dignity, sanctity, peace, prosperity
and liberty of the human being. Thus the challenge to foster a new
beginning that will consolidate a culture that celebrates the
sovereignty and inalienable right of every citizen.
A democratic response to our political challenge can only become
feasible if all divergent interest, political goals and ambitions are
subordinated to an all encompassing apex body that will prosecute on
behalf of the Gambian opposition, the struggle to create a new
beginning. Thus the North Carolina conference is pivotal.
I hope that a convention for a democratic Gambia can emerge as a
principle which will endeavor to create a democratic representation for
all those seeking to have a new beginning.
Since we have gone this route before, particularly in the case of
NADD, and the possibility for political leaders to embroil in
leadership struggles is very real, the mechanism and the dictates to
choose a leader should not be confine only to political leaders in the
Gambia but should be extended to other leadership within the diaspora.
If a leader should emerge from the diaspora, such a person can be
repatriated to the country to meet any and all constitutional
obligations.
To ensure that the political leaders in the Gambia are a formidable
force in any transitional arrangement to usher a new democratic
dispensation, there should be a provision in any constitutional review
that will create a body, and the person who is elected president cannot
do certain things without the advice and consent of this body for the
duration of this transitional period. All the opposition political
leaders should be in this body. This can mitigate the desire for anyone
of them be a leader or to become a president.
