Modern transceivers like my FT950, and probably many of the Kenwoods, use a
transistor to key the linear amplifier. Amps built in the last 15 years or
so are compatible with these low voltage levels, although it's a good idea
to consult the manuals for the amplifier and the transceiver. My
40-year-old amplifier has a transmit-receive relay which is perhaps 60 volts
open-circuit, and dozens of milliamps when energized. The inductive
kickback would have probably fried the transistors in my 950, so this relay
buffer circuit is necessary. You wouldn't need it if you were keying any
linear amp from your Drake transmitters. I still have my C line, but
haven't put it on the air since getting the FT950 four years ago. When
driving a modern amplifier from a tube transceiver, you should also think
about how you will deliver ALC voltage from the amp back to the transmitter.
The voltage ranges for the DC ALC voltage have varied a lot over the years,
and it isn't very easy to throttle yyour tube rig back to 40 watts and be
certain it will stay there. Nevertheless, having an amplifier is fun,
especially if the neighbors and your own family can put up with the
additional RFI.
