long antennas on hand helds are very bad for the antenna connecters.  They 
put alot of strain on the connecter.
at that point, you might as well use a magnet mount antenna and slap it on a 
metal surface of some kind close by...it's not like you can walk around with 
a 47 inch antenna on the HT.
