Get her a Baofeng UV-5R. $65 out the door from http://www.uv-5r.com (which is also wouxun.us or importcommunications.com )
Only tricky bit is that transmit and receive frequencies have to be programmed in separately. It doesn't save the offset into memory. Kind of a pain, but there it is. But for a bit less than half of what the Wouxun KG-UV2D costs, it's a decent compromise. Unless you can't subtract 0.600 or 5.000 from a frequency, in which case, get the Wouxun. Actually, either the Wouxun or the Baofeng will do fine, I have both now. I'll be working on the programming guide for the Baofeng shortly.
