in extreme cases solar flares can Zaffect the vhf bands but they primarily 
affect the hf bands.  The site I use is as follows 
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/latest/wwv.txt.  As of a couple of hours 
ago, the flux was 100 the a index was 10 and the k index was 2.  73- pat
