After all this discussion and the link to the NLS player
support web site, I called up my regional library and asked if I
could exchange my NLS standard player for the advanced model and
they said that would be fine so I sent it off and am now waiting
for the new player which should arrive in a week or so, I hope.

See what you'all made me do?
