some of the differences are: the level of radio theory and operating 
practice you must know. Also, since the general allows you access to 
the HF bands, you must know a lot more about antennas, types of radio 
emissions, (everything from SSB and how it is generated generally to 
digital and how they work), propagation and how radio waves are 
affected by different layers of the ionosphere, and more.
The general is not really that hard, it is just a step up from technician.
