I've noticed that the talking voting machines in our county act the same 
way.  that is, the pitch increases with the speed.  I suppose it doesn't 
help that these features are usually designed by folks who will not be using 
them personally.  I'm certainly no expert on these things but a couple of 
possibilities.  Could it be that' it takes too much processing power and/or 
circuitry to adjust for pitch as well as change the speed?  Remember the 
early attempts at this such as the GE handi-cassette were rather choppy.  As 
processors got better, things got much smoother so now we have the Victor 
Stream and the NLS player which both have very smooth, pitch-compensated 
speed-increase.  And both are designed specifically for use by those of us 
who are blind or partially blind.  Lou
