Butch,

Synchronous detection is a method of compensating for the effects of 
selective fading, which is caused by the disappearance of the carrier on an 
AM signal.  A signal locked to the received carrier frequency is fed to the 
radio's detector so that when the real carrier disappears, the detector 
remains happy.  The result is a lack of the distortion typically heard when 
a station starts to fade out.
