To My Fellow Celiacs:

Cake and I have always been good friends. Being diagnosed as a celiac almost 20 years ago meant the loss of my beloved TastyKake snack cakes. This was perhaps the most devastating aspect of the disease's management. I have just made the Red Velvet Cake mix (one of several mixes) manufactured and sold by Williams-Sonoma. Yes, they are quite expensive but, believe me, they are worth every single penny! Up to now I have never come across a bake mix or a cake that was *exactly* like a wheat-based cake mix. This cake is as gorgeous as it is scrumptious! If you add up the normal price of the cake mix, plus the ingredients for the mix as well as the ingredients for the frosting as the cost of your time, it is still as least half the price of buying a smaller and not as delicious prepared cake at a bakery. This past May I purchased a gluten free cake from a local bakery to celebrate my husband's birthday (he is not a celiac but I wanted to share his birthday cake). I paid $65.00 for the cake. While it was worth the price in order to mark my husband's birthday, I can now make a birthday cake for less than half that cost making celebrating events with a cake within reasonable costs. I have no interest in Williams-Sonoma other than being a loyal customer (I love kitchenware!). So, please take my advice - next time you need a beyond belief cake, try one of the several mixes available at Williams-Sonoma. Their mixes, BTW, make a two layer cake.

Take care,

PS If you sign up for emails from Wiliams-Sonoma, you will get alerts when they have a sale. I purchased all of my cake mixes on sale which made them equal in cost to buying gluten free cake mixes in the grocery store! And their store in Allentown at the Lehigh Valley Mall, is a great place to shop. Sherry, the store manager, is a real doll and she will help you all she can.
