Seriously, beans? Why would anyone intentionally eat them (by intentionally, I mean if someone had a choice between foodstuffs)? Beans prepared without all kinds of sauces and spices and double cooking and other special techniques... well, it's pretty much like eating paper to me.
And the gassiness?
Many years ago, when I was in my "meat is bad" phase, I recall reading an article stating that if you ate large quantities of beans your body would compensate with additional enzymes to ease the bean's digestive insults. I never found out if this was true because I never got past eating beans for a couple of days at most. Man, the bloating and gassiness was horrible.
Another article I read more recently (one of the science oriented websites, I believe) was classifying alzheimer's as type-3 diabetes. Reading that article made a lot more sense than the Neal Barnard article.
