My thinking, if you cut it, it's hard to put the wire back.  I think it 
works best over all, with the rings in the middle.  The headset just 
reached, if I bent my head at the correct angle while adjusting the rings 
and pulling my hands away, to minimize the capacitive coupling.  I wonder 
what the neighbors think!
