Tom,

You can tell JAWS to use the sound card in your laptop rather than the 
default sound card.  I suspect that when you plug in your USB cable, the 590 
becomes the default sound card, and hence JAWS goes away.

As to the other problems, you might try running the Device Manager to see if 
there are any hardware conflicts.  Without more information, I'm not sure 
what else to suggest.
