My partner's machine did something similar recently. I found that
straightening out a kink in the IDE cable to the drive fixed it, so I
replaced that cable.
[I believe what you're running into is a "fail safe" mechanism that
tries to save your valuable CD from being trapped inside an
inoperable drive.]
