There are a variety of "messenger" programs that run over the
Internet, and might reasonably ask for an email address to log in. But
"Windows Messenger" is a small utility, buolt in since Windows for
Workgroups (I believe) for sending messages to other machines on the
same LAN (*local* network), and simply being logged into Windows on the
computer should be sufficient....
You might check out VNC as a freeware/shareware/multi-platform
alternative. You'd need to be running a "VNC Server" on each computer
to be controlled, and a "VNC client", which might be simpler to
understand than Microsoft's terminology.
