Dear readers,
I have a question regarding modem/com port conflicts and plug and
pray. I have a plan and want to solicate input before I implement.
Background: Purchased a Toshiba Infinia in February of 1997. It came
with a PnP modem (Sierra with sound card combo). I Installed a second
USR Sportster 33.6. Never had any problems. Was able to run the
Sierra modem software and HotFax Message Center software on the USR
concurrently without a problem. I do not remember, but I believe the
comports were operational, but showing a conflict, so I disabled them
in the CMOS (seemed the modems wanted to be on Com 1 and 2, rather
than 3 and 4 & since this is PnP, they go where they want!). They
still appearred in the device manager, but with a yellow !.
Everything seemed to work fine so I ignored the !s.
After a recent system crash, I did a complete re-install, and I can
no longer get the FAX software to recognize the printer driver to
drive the modem to send a FAX (always reports the printer driver is
not installed). I have tried several combinations of enabling and
disabling the comports and installing the Sierra modem (I have moved
the USR Sportster to a second computer where it is working just fine,
installed as Com 4 with Com 1 and 2 showing no problems).
My thought is that perhaps due to the way PnP works, I must first
physically remove the modem, remove all drivers, then, enable the com
ports in CMOS and re-boot the computer so it recognizes the com
ports. THEN, add the modem and allow it to be recognized and the
drivers installed. Anyone see a flaw in my plan, or an alternate to
get the modems working on the Toshiba computer again?? (well,
actually, everything with the modems works EXCEPT faxing out! --
Internet access and incoming faxes work fine).
TIA
Jim
