Butch,
Synchronous detection is a method of compensating for the effects of
selective fading, which is caused by the disappearance of the carrier on an
AM signal. A signal locked to the received carrier frequency is fed to the
radio's detector so that when the real carrier disappears, the detector
remains happy. The result is a lack of the distortion typically heard when
a station starts to fade out.
