hello tom, the collar is not doing anything but making the mike firm 
to the radio.  it serves no purpose as far as grounding the ground 
connections are all wired to the pins of the connector.  i personally 
don't like a mike cable hanging out of the front of my radio so i use 
the mike on the back of the k3.  same with the key so its all clear 
in front of the radio.  my earphones also plug in the back.  i took a 
collar from a old connector and a piece of thin metal a size of a 
penny and put it inside of the collar and screwed it on the front 8 
pin mike connector so it is all covered.  take care, c u 73 mike
