That may be true of older technology, but the newer cards have much
better resolution/throughput/performance. My 3D card uses Rendition's
Verite 1000 chipset (there are three newer versions) and is capable of
displaying at 1280x1024. With only 4 meg of VRAM, I have to reduce
the color count to get that high resolution -- but 16 bit color is
just fine for me. (I doubt that many people can see a difference
between 16bit color and the higher counts.)
