firstly, I haven't owned either of these, but have used both.
For accessibility, they're about the same.  Both the Icom and the yaesu 
speech synths speak freq, S meter and mode.
For receiver performance, I would go with the Yaesu.  It's got a similar 
receiver design to the high end rigs.  As does the 718.
At the end of the day, it may just come down to which one is cheaper for 
you.
If you have no particular beef with either company, go with the one you like 
the most.
Allot of blind ops won't buy the yaesu on principle alone, but if your not 
hung up on that, than your options are open.
