Hi Trevor,
I have a very old rotator, with a knob that you set to the position you want the antenna to adopt then press a button. The rotator is then supposed to point the antenna in that direction. I think it's an AR40, but it's decades old!
I got a friend to mark the cardinal compass points for me, so I have a pretty good idea where I'm beaming.
I think the modern solution is to use PC software to control the rotator. I understand N1MM Logger and many other programs will take your grid locator and compute the beam heading from the callsign you entered then point your beam in the right direction. I suppose this offers an option for long or short path, but I haven't reached that level of sophistication yet and probably won't do until my old rotator hands in its notice (HI).
Well, I suppose software's the way to go these days.
Cheers & 73,
Terry, GM3WUX
