Checking is the woodworker's term for what many people see as splitting. Checking is caused when wood dries faster on the outside than the inside, which is normal, and the surface of the outside wood splits open under tension. It's often a good way to figure out where the heart of the tree was because the checking normally occurs where ray cells, which run outward from the pith line, exist.
