Larry,
Butch is correct, most folks use the IRLP distribution. On the other hand,
if you know Linux or Unix, you can configure IRLP on other distributions. I
have IRLP node 4446 running on a Fedora Linux. I had the Fedora system
running for other things and didn't want a second box just for IRLP. I run
Speakup on the Fedora box and completely configured IRLP without sighted
help. But, Butch is correct again, there's no help from the IRLP team if
you use something nonstandard. For me, doing it myself was part of the
experience.

You might also consider All Star, a similar system to IRLP with everything
open source and no proprietary hardware required. It runs on the Asterisk
open source PBX. I plan to move from IRLP to All Star one of these days
when I have time to configure it all.

I haven't set up EchoLink but do know there's a bridge with All Star too.

 73,
Jim, KY2D

Subject: IRLP Node configuration

Has anyone of you put into service a IRLP / Echo link system? We would be
interested in learning from you what worked and what Linux worked best for
you with IRLP software.

Our goal is to be able to completely configure and maintain our IRLP Nodes
with out the services of a sighted person. I have learned of Vinux, does
anyone used Vinux successfully with IRLP?
