Hi David, welcome to the list.
The letter N was dropped in the mid 70's when the FCC initiated the new,
at that time, callsign structure! Novices were given 2 by 3 calls,
starting with K A, Techs and Generals were given 1 by 3 calls, starting
with N, Advanced were given 2 by 2 calls starting with K A, and Extra's
were given 2 by 1 calls starting with A A. When these 2 by 1 callsigns
ran out they went to 2 by 2 calls, starting with A A. Believe me, it
really confused some of the old timers! GRIN! I remember a station came
on our local repeater with the callsign of AD8R, and this old boy kept
insisting his call was K8ADR! GRIN!
