 Howard, 1961 is a long time back but as I remember it is a Heartly 
oscillator which makes the audio.  Then there is a calibrated circuit using 
a wire wound pot.   You turn it on and there is a pointer on the pot and you 
turn the antenna until the tones match.  By flipping a switch then qrt 
turning the antenna and your there.  Yes this is across an analogue meter. 
Does this make any kind of sense?    Other than the calibrated pot you have 
the right idea.       73
