I tried the Alt Shift H message-specific Jaws option in an e-mail containing 
links, but still no joy.

Tom try this if you are using JFW alt plus shift plus h.  If this works it
is message specific meaning you will have to do this each time you want
links to appear in a message, without changing a setting in tools under the
read tab.
