    Kevin and all:

Well, it all boils down to the art of compromise, I think. That plus the
"radio in, radio out" principle.

I'm sure that, at some point, the XYL will be interested in something to
support her many other hobbies, in addition to ham radio, and we'll probably
work out that purchase too.

Of course, it does help that it is just the two of us now as empty nesters.

There indeed are certain advantages to our stage in life! (grin)

And, then there is the "If you can't beat em, join em" mentra that I'm sure
many of our XYL's submit to eventually. (grin)

Tom,

I think you've perhaps hit on the solution as to how to get new ham gear.
For those who are not blessed with the sweet ladies to whom you and I are
married, perhaps if they just bitch loud and long about the inferior quality
of their toys, their wives will either have mercy or give in just to have
peace. <BIG GRIN>

Take care and very 73.

    Steve:

Great minds think in the same direction here.

I didn't know if I could pull it off this quickly either, and I still have
to sell the 480 first, but the XYL agreed that we could swing the rest of
the purchase price if I could come up with the initial funds by selling the
480.

Of course, it helps that the XYL is a ham. She will never admit it,
probably, but I think sometimes this newer equipment, especially with its
enhanced accessibility, is fascinating for her too. It also helps her in
that I don't have to be running to her with a need for sighted help whenever

a programming or rig control issue arises. (grin) Of course, the better
receive and filtering helps her as well, since she doesn't have to hear me
complain as much about the difficulties of participating in a net under
crowded band conditions. (another big grin)

Tnx Tom. Since you and I sometimes exchange contest scores and info, I
couldn't let you get the jump on me with a new radio.

The truth is that i had been planning to buy one in the fall. But since
that is usually the start of some nice fall propagation and also the new
contesting season, I figured I'd rather get it a little sooner and use
the time to get acquainted with it.
