    I didn't notice an immediate change in the SWR, but once I started 
transmitting, things deteriorated rapidly to the point that I lost the use 
of the antenna completely.

And, yes, I believe it was a crimp-on connector.  The coax run was a run of 
RG8X purchased from HRO in Denver, I believe.
