Ron,

There is an adjustment inside the box that will boost the power to something 
more useable.  You'll have to remove a little plate on the back to access 
it, but once you tweak it, you'll have all the power you need.  The reason 
for the limited range is to comply with FCC rules governing the range of 
low-power transmitters, so most products (like the ones from the shack) have 
no adjustment.  The only other products I know of are from Ramsey 
Electronics, but they're much more expensive, and they probably give you 
more power than you'll ever need.

If you don't want to tinker with that adjustment, you might try wrapping a 
piece of wire around the end of the whip antenna.  That might just increase 
the range enough for you.
