Hi tom,
Well, I may have what you want. This control is an inline volume
control with the usual stereo plug on one end and a stereo jack on the
other. The whole thing is less than a foot long and you put it between
the device and the speakers. It has a small pot with a thumbwheel for
adjusting the control. I believe it cost around $7 or so.
The radio shack catalog number I have is:
42-2559 and last time I ordered it, it was only available online or via
their toll free phone.
Hope it's still around as it can be a handy device.
I've had mine for a couple of years, so can't vouch for it's availability.
