Well, than I'd say it might have been band conditions.

It's a bit of a trip between Michigan and Kansas on 40 meters at that time 
of the day, and perhaps the guy in Nebraska I was talking to was running 
some power.

It's strange, though, that you weren't heard better here, since you heard me 
so well.

Are you going to try the 20-meter net this afternoon?

I have a 480 and it works great on 80, power is 100, I think mike gain is
at 50.  You were very good copy here.
