cutting r53 does effect VHF in that it extends each end of the VHF amateur 
band by 2MHZ.
Are you saying there is another resister, and it is a resister not a diode, 
that opens up the VHF and possibly UHf bands into the commercial sectors? 
IE, 136-174 and 420-470?
this must be a fairly new mod as it didn't exist a few years ago when I 
first found out about the HF tx mod.
R52 only effects the main band receivers ability to listen down 2 and up 
2MHZ on VHF and down 10MHZ on UHF...doesn't open up the commercial bands.

if there is another mod for the commercial bands perhaps you could share it.
