Guys, I believe you have set me straight.  It seems that I was not holding a 
carrier into the meter long enough before pressing the meter buttons.  I 
find that if I hold the carrier for a second or two the meter usually works. 
Thanks much, I guess an old turkey like me can still learn something new 
after all.
