Subj: Re: Buharry thanks for streaming these videos
Buharry,
Thanks for re-sending the links. I did not get to watch the videos the
first time around. It is clear from the presentation that they will
be
displacing ITC facilities at Kerr Seringe and the forest in question is
Bijilo Forest Park a major bird-watching and wildlife viewing site.
Although I am not qualified to say much about economic viability of the
project, I am a little surprised that they would chose to locate it
next
to the forest park. Bijilo Forest Park is a gazetted National Forest
Park designated for Forest and Wildlife protection since early 1950s.
Unfortunately, it is one of three remnant forest patches Abuko Nature
Reserve and Salagi Forest the other two, left between Brufut and
Banjul.
Since 1982, the park was actively managed as a wildlife sanctuary and
birdwatching place for the tourist. Despite its small size (40 ha)
compared to Abuko Nature Reserve (100+ha) the park has vibrant monkey
and bird population.
Forest Regulation and legislation aside, I do not believe there is room
for both wildlife and the many people the development is hoping to
attract. Increased human presence within the park will surely degrade
the habitat and increase wildlife-human conflict. Monkeys are creative
and adaptive species and could easily resort to scavenging or stealin
when there is easy food supply. Both the monkeys and many birds are
woodland species and as such would not survive the kind of encroachment
being proposed.
I know there may be compelling economic reasons for project but it
should not be at the expense of the only remaining coastal forest park
in Kombo.
