A couple of questions:

Have you tried a startup repair on the drive that won't boot?

If, when you encounter the lack of a Windows OS when you start the recovery, rather than load drivers, have you just clicked next to see what happens?

Do you have another system to use? You may be able to make a system image of the old drive if the old drive is connected to an operating computer. 

I would recommend either Acronis which is not free or Macrium Reflect which is free to assist you going forward. Obviously as you have make a recovery disk right away with whatever program you use.
