Hi Listers,
I saw this reviewed on eham. I may have promise for people who want to run qrp and have antenna restrictions such as myself.

Great portable antenna Time owned: more than 12 months
I have had mine for about a year and a half. I am posting the review I sent to Alex.

I ordered a mag loop from Alex PY1AHD. It is a kit that requires a little soldering, but I put it together in about 15 minutes.

I must say that its performance has exceeded my expectations. It is standing up against the wall of my second story ham shack. I have worked several stations on 20, 30 and now, tonight, 40 meters. The 40 meter band here near Seattle is pretty much dead.

After calling CQ on my IC-7000 at 100 watts without success, I fired up the IC-703 at 10 watts and went to 7.030. The loop tuned up to two bars on the IC-703 SWR meter. I put the 703 on a repeating loop calling CQ. I was first answered by WA6TQJ in Davis, CA. After that I called CQ again a few times and was answered by K7MOA in Carlsbad, CA, which is just about as far south in CA you can go.

I expected the loop to work well on 20 and above, but I am really impressed with its performance on 40.

Alex makes an outstanding product!

fantastic portable antenna! Time owned: more than 12 months
My name is Murilo PY2DS . I have purchased on July 2008 at FENARCOM the AlexLoop SML 7-30 portable magnetic loop antenna.

I went for Christmas to my grandfather's farm located in GUAREI on south São Paulo, taking with me the FT-817ND and the small magnetic loop antenna.

On Christmas Eve I went to an elevated point near the farm entrance, with the FT817 hanged on my neck. The antenna was supported on a bamboo pole.

I was running only 2.5 watts with the FT 817 powered by the internal batteries and have made contacts in 20 meters with Brazilian stations

I was quite happy with the results when I have been surprised with a contact that I will never forget in my life.

It was JE1LET located in Tokyo metropolitan area on 14.222 MHz USB, coming with a 4:1 signal. I have never imagined that I could establish a QSO like this running only 2.5 watts on such small antenna.

Some days latter, I returned for the New Years Eve with a 12 VDC, 7 amps battery.

I have made contacts to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, U.S.A., Hawaii, German, England, and Australia running 5 watts.

It was unbelievable because in 11 years on radio I have never listen Australia. I was amazed because I have not only listened, but I have talked to Australia.

I decided to write you and give my congratulations for the fantastic product.

Murilo

Unbelievable Time owned: 6 to 12 months
My AlexLoop is a different version than the one pictured--it is a rigid loop of approx 3/8" copper tubing.

The first miracle was I ordered this loop on the Monday before Thanksgiving, and it arrived the day after Thanksgiving, 4 days Brazil to the USA west coast. Amazing. The loop went together in about 45 minutes, 95% of that time being my trying to get the loop into a perfect circle which I later found out is not necessary. You could probably assemble one in under 15 minutes.

The performance of this loop is astonishing. There is just no other word for it. I use mine on a small cheapo photo tripod, so it is about 3 feet off the ground. I have worked Russia, Hawaii, Japan, and numerous stateside contacts with it. On SSB. With 5-10 watts! It sets up in a few minutes, and is so handy I just leave it in my car. When I have some spare time for portable operating, I load up my K2 or FT-817, and away I go. With the AlexLoop you don't need to be near a tree for a wire, and this opens up many more portable locations. The loop tunes 7-30 MHz, though I have not tried it on 10Mhz or 7 Mhz yet. Like all mag loops, it is more efficient at the higher frequencies.

Alex's workmanship is excellent, and the AlexLoop is a great looking piece of gear. I am now totally sold on magnetic loops, and have just finished building my own version that is optimized for higher power (and weighs about 10 times what my AlexLoop weighs!).

This year I am running an all mag-loop, all QRP Field Day effort, and if I have further insights I will post them here.

Can't be beat for the antenna restricted ham Time owned: more than 12 months
I have the Alex loop.
I must say that it stays in my station wagon.
Often I get up around 5 AM and go for a good coffee.
When it was very cold I would just pull up to a steel pole and clamp the ALAX LOOP to it.
The loop worked as well as the end fed wire and I was using 10 watts to check into a 40 meter SSB net.
Because it is very light and black in color I put it out of my 4th floor apartment window and have worked into Europe using 5 watts.
CHECK THIS OUT
Hello my friend Bob
Thank you for e-mail and QSO , ur signal very strong 599 in Santiago de Cuba
I use 100watt and dipole antena my rig is Very old equipament Yaesu FT747GX
Do you like send ur QSL card direct to my manager EA7ADH and include 1 or 2 green stamps.
My manager confirm only direct.
My best 73 for you and family.
Eduardo. CO8LY
I have also worked several hams in Italy on 20 meters with 5 watts.
For the small size it has been to get antenna restricted hams back on the air.
Working into the WEST coast is a breeze with just a mild band opening.
It also make for an excellent back up antenna for emergencies or if high winds take your long wire down.
You can place it on a stand and rotate it and it nulls out noise so good you;ll hear nothing but SSB and CW.
Their also used by the Military both here and in Europe.
Read my other post about the MFJ loop and you will see that I am known as the ham in a can.
One ham who is wheel chair mobile is working all kinds of DX.
The MAG LOOP is still a mystery to my because they operate so well with low efficiency.
I rate it a 5 STAR PLUS++++
