The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest referenced in the blog post but not mentioned by name is in the far southwestern corner of Appalachian North Carolina. It is a relative postage stamp of remnant eastern seaboard virgin forest; if you have not ever experienced such a mature ecosystem, it is well worth putting on your bucket list. It is easier to understand why the early settlers were so awestruck at the majesty and natural resources of the New World.

Our first visit was on a warm summer day while a light drizzle fell; quite comfortable hiking, and the moisture liberated a rich peaty organic oeuvre that made the experience a total sensory and tactile immersion so powerful that I can still smell it in my mind.
