I looked at Texas Towers, but their masts seem quite pricy.

They probably are of good quality, though, which is appealing.

The 2 by 4 idea sounds much more affordable and doable right now, and I'm 
going to check at Lowe's for one of the Channelmaster types.

well, you could get a support about twenty feet high with three 12-foot 2 by
4's overlapped about three feet.

You can look at Texas Towers, they have telescopic masts.
