By the sounds of it, if you shake the mouse and try to move the vertical
movement roller you get some response. Carefully take the case off the mouse
and look at the rollers. You should see a small wheel with slots in it that
spins between two small blocks. Check to see if there are any dust bunnies
in the space where the wheel resides. One of the little blocks is an
infrared receiver that detects the movement of the slotted wheel. If the
detector gets covered or dirty, then the mouse won't work properly.
As suggested in another e-mail, swap out the mouse for known good one and
view the result. If the new one works and your sure the old one is
clean.....buy a new mouse.
