Remember when Eagleton dropped out in '72? The party national
committee can select a new replacement nominee.
Last minute changes do happen. In Minnesota a few years ago, the
Republican candidate for governor dropped out due to scandal a few
days before the election. Arne Carlson was named as the replacement
nominee -- and he won, defeating an incumbent.
This comes to mind partly because former Gov. Carlson, though a
Republican, has endorsed Obama.
