You might try holding the bottom button on the right down while you power on
the radio. This will perform a full reset. If the speech is working, it will
say full reset and then you push the button again. If the speech isn't
working, then just push the button again after a few seconds. I can't think
of what the button is called, but it is the very bottom button on the right
next to the knob that clicks when you turn it. Hope this helps.

Only had my 480 for 2 weeks, so no expert here, and not sure from your
description if the receiver is dead or working. If it is just something
goofy going on with the display, maybe it is in demo mode.
Do things other than the display work, like the knobs and buttons, or is
it totally dead?
