And then there is the stuff my neighbors put on their rear addition: shiplap-joint plywood panels with oily cedar sheets bonded to the surface. The imitation of cedar shakes is achieved by running a 1/8" wide saw blade almost but not quite through to the plywood; maybe 3/32" of cedar left over the plywood.

Then there is my barn out back about 15 feet away sided with the cedar shingles I nailed on about the time they finished their addition. 

I know which looks better, and I know which is going to last longer at keeping the weather out.
