Harvey,
     This is probably a long shot but did by chance make any settings
changes when it comes to how the tabs are loaded?  I am also guessing
that you have not loaded in browser add-ons that might control how the
tabs function?  If not, the setting might have been changed without
your knowledge via upgrade or program crash.  Specifically I am
talking about this setting:

Don't load tabs until selected: Firefox will only load the active tab
when it starts or restores your previous session. This can make
startup much faster if you are restoring many tabs. The other open
tabs will be loaded as you click on them.

You can check this setting by following the directions on the web page
below at Mozilla.

More detailed settings for Tab control can be found by following these
directions.
Control How Firefox Uses Tabs: Firefox allows you to control how it
handles tabs when you open and close the browser in the settings menu.
Click Tools > Options (or Firefox > Preferences on a Mac) and click
the "Tabs" button. You can change some of the default behavior for how
Firefox handles tabs and restores tabs.
