...from the rear-facing third row seat of a sky blue 1964 Pontiac Tempest station wagon:

We had a 1964 Pontiac Tempest station wagon because it was the only wagon that would fit into our 1937 house's built-in garage. To make it fit I was given the exciting job for a 10-year old boy of demolishing a section of the plaster wall at the front of the garage so that the iconic Pontiac projecting nose snout could fit between the studs (thank goodness there was not a stud located in the center of the wall!). With this modification the garage door would close with 1-inch to spare between it and the rear bumper.
There were three precision docking devices in play to ensure that the front bumper did not enter into the basement stairwell:
1. Horizontal lines drawn on the front wall;
2. 2" x 4" boards on the floor;
3. A bolt and twine.
Entering the garage with the headlights on, the top edge of the beam between light and the darker netherworld of the auto cavern would begin to descend as the car drew closer to the wall. When the shadow line aligned with the lines on the wall, you stabbed the brake...
...at the precise instant that the front wheels made contact with the stringer of the ladder frame of 2 x 4s on the floor braced against the front wall...
...as the bolt hanging from the ceiling went "tap, tap, tap" on the windshield.
