Hi Rick: 

\tune your antenna 1\st, with the amp in stby, using 100W from your exciter. 
Next, lower the exciter's drive to 10W, tune your SB-220 with that pwr, you should see about 180W, then bring your exciter up to 100 and re_adjust your load controll to maximium pitch, you should see about 1KW. 
Check your SWR then before switching to SSB. Be sure to lower your drive to about 75/80W before opperating. 
Also, make sure your tuning proceedure is in CW. I wouldn't keep my auto tuner in line and I'd guess your manual tuner is rated for 1.2KW CW or more. That's my tune up proceedure and I run a KW-TS940SAT and HK-SB-220.
